So you’ve got yourself a shiny new flat at Leon House? Congrats! Welcome to London living. But what next? Once family and friends have all visited and the flat warming corks have all been popped, it’s time to leave your stylish new surrounds and head out to explore your new neighbourhood.
And lucky for you, you picked a good un. Ok, it’s fair to say Croydon hasn’t always had the best of reputations. But the once maligned Borough is having the last laugh. Croydon is in an exciting period of change with over £5.2 billion being spent on its regeneration.
At East Croydon Cool, we’re dedicated to showcasing the best of ‘The Cronx’ (yep, that’s a thing). Especially conscious of the large number of people moving here for the first time, we spotlight the various bars, cafes, pubs, restaurants, shops, gyms, galleries and events on offer. Ultimately, we want to encourage newcomers to spend time (and money!) in their new area, get involved in the local community and become ambassadors for their new neighbourhood.
So to get you started, below is a suggested itinerary of Saturday activities…all of which are easily accessible from your Leon House doorstep 😉
Keen to meet some other locals to enjoy these places with? Join us at one of our Meet Ups or Events to get to know other Croydon residents. Upcoming events include a Sunday Stroll (sponsored walk and Roast Dinner) on 5th May and a Croydonites Night (immersive theatre performance festival followed by wine and nibbles) on 18th May.
10am Coffee at Coffee Shotter
Home to the South London Vegan and Vegetarian online community, start your Saturday with a delicious blend from Horsham Roasters and a side order of weekend papers.
11am Brunch at Crushed Bean
Serving up coffees and vegan/vegetarian food throughout the week, on Saturdays you can tuck yourself away downstairs to enjoy the brunch menu.
12pm A dose of culture at Matthews Yard
There’s always something new to try at this cultural community hub. From immersive sound meditation and life drawing to yoga and theatre performances; keep an eye on their social channels to secure your spot or turn up and see what fate has in store!
1pm Lunch at Boxpark
A fail safe meeting spot for North London friends who still can’t grasp how quick it is to get from central to Croydon. Boxpark needs no introduction. It’s huge variety of food options cater to all tastebuds…and ad-hoc afternoon sports screenings appease other halves moaning about leaving the house on match days.
2pm Food Shop at Surrey Street Market
Stock up on your 5 a day at one of London’s oldest markets and keep your eyes out for various street art pieces on your way around.
3pm Country Walk
One of the biggest surprises about Croydon’s concrete jungle is that it’s surrounded by green spaces. Take a bus/tram from the high street to Coombe Lane for a city vista from Addington Hills Viewing Platform to get your bearings, then work your way through Coombe wood and out into Lloyd Park.
4pm RnR at Surrey Beauty Therapy
Ease the stresses of the working week with a treatment at Surrey Beauty Therapy in the Wellness Therapy Centre. Located just off Surrey Street, there’s a huge range of relaxing treatments including facials, body wraps and sports massages.
5pm Afternoon Games at the Ludoquist
There’s something for everyone at this award winning board game café. Whether you’re entertaining kids, on a date, with a group of friends or just want some time alone in the company of strangers; the expert team will find the perfect game for you.
6pm Pre-dinner drinks at The Joker
The original wall tiling and mosaic floor have been a hit on Instagram feeds since opening but appetites are just as strong for the great quality food and drinks served up at this South Croydon pub. Start your Saturday night with a cocktail devised by the former Head Mixologist at Harvey Nichols.
7pm Dinner at Crepes and Cones
Whilst a menu including burgers & wings might not make it the fanciest place in town, it definitely has the best soundtrack. Crepes and Cones is owned by grime artists Krept & Konan; local boys who have invested back into their community with a dessert bar concept that brings A-List music talent to Croydon throughout the year.
8pm Wine winning at Basil and Grape
Its previous incarnation (as a franchised Italian wine and tapas bar) was such a hit that the owners have just gone independent. Basil & Grape will continue to serve fine wines and classic spuntini alongside pizzas and cocktails. Book one of the wine tasting sessions in their dedicated tasting room for some additional Saturday night entertainment.
9pm Beer stop at Art and Craft
Located on Surrey Street, this beautifully renovated building has a craft beer selection to whet the appetite of any cicerone. But if that’s not your thing, the on-tap fizz, wine selection and live music is sure to do it.
10pm Ball pun fun at Funhouse
Bring on the balls! There’s plenty of fun to be had making ball related puns for your Instagram captions at Croydon’s only adult ball pit. Your inner child will also enjoy the kitsch cocktail selection and décor.
11pm Late night pubbing at Mr Fox
This ‘cocktail pub’ has kept it’s music history (it was previously a nightclub) in check with a late license and DJs playing until the early hours. And if you’re not quite ready for the dance floor shuffling; hit up the only shuffle board tables in town.
12pm Treehouse Club Lounge
Whilst ‘Out Out’ venues might still need some work (!), the Club Lounge at Treehouse has introduced numerous party nights (including We Love Garage, 100% Old Skool Ibiza Anthems and The Cheesy Bits) which are guaranteed to get you on the dancefloor.
